Celebration of The World Hijab Day

Every year on February 1st have been said to be World Hijab Day and it is open to be participated by every women in the World. 2014 is first time it is celebrated in Malaysia and it have received a warm welcome from Malaysian women not only the Muslims but also non-Muslims. It was first introduced by it’s founder Nazma Khan, a young New Yorker last year.

According to the founder, Nazma Khan, her objective was to allay some of the myths and controversies surrounding why Muslim women choose to wear the hijab. She also encourage all the women of Muslims or non-Muslims to experienced wearing hijab for a day as a means to foster religious tolerance and understanding.

During the February 1st 2014, all the participants have gathered near the Sunway Pyramid mall in Selangor to celebrated the World Hijab Day. On that special occasion, they asked randomly to women both locals and foreigners that passing by to try wearing a hijab. They were given a piece of hijab and were help on how to wear it by the participants. Surprisingly, all the approached women take this positively as to show their support to this special occasion.

As the news spread widely throughout the world, it manage to gain interest from of women, both the Muslims and non-Muslims. Over 100 countries started to participate with more than 50 appointed World Hijab Day ambassadors in over 20 countries.


On the official website of World Hijab Day, it is stated that Malaysia has a total of 7 ambassadors. One of them were Murshidah Said (pic on left). During the occasion, she have posted a picture of her nieces donning hijabs in Melbourne, Australia.

Besides that, two of the ambassadors were said to be non-Muslims, namely Mrs Universe 2013, Carol Lee, who is said to have endorsed the movement and Felixia Yeap, the ex-Playboy bunny and model, who shares her story on wearing the hijab. 


Murshidah Said have posted a video on her personal YouTube account where the video is a footage of her interviewing Carol Lee regarding her support towards World Hijab Day. During the interview, the Mrs Universe mentioned that “ Although I looks different than before, but I realize that it never change who I truly am inside here. ” while placing her hand on the chest. This statement however opened up people that whether wearing a hijab or not does not change a person to someone else. Full interview can be watched here 

An official World Hijab Day Malaysia’s Facebook page have been created which it main purpose was to help spread the news and also an alternative channel for all the Malaysian women in hijab to share their thought and anything regarding the hijab.
